CBS News is an American news channel, the flagship property of CBS Corporation, the media conglomerate run by parent company ViacomCBS.
The CBS News division produces and broadcasts news programming through television network CBS and its 24-hour digital streaming news service, CBSN. It is headquartered in New York City and maintains bureaus across the world. CBS News also partners with local, national, and international newsgathering organizations.
CBS first began airing news programs on radio in 1930 and on television in 1948. In the early days of radio, it was the only news outlet to broadcast live coverage of the 1933 Lindbergh kidnapping case and World War II’s D-Day invasion. In the 1940s and 1950s, CBS News gained recognition for its coverage of major political events, including the 1946 U.S. presidential election, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the Vietnam War.
The CBS Evening News is one of the longest-running news programs in American television history, having been broadcast every weekday since September 24, 1963. It is the second longest-running American TV news program behind NBC Nightly News, which has been on air since 1970.
CBS Sunday Morning is another major franchise of the channel, launched in 1979 and named a Peabody Award winner in 2017. It often focuses on longer-form stories and is hosted by Jane Pauley.
Along with traditional news programming, CBS News also produces and broadcasts a number of news magazines and documentaries. 48 Hours is an investigative news magazine show that debuted in 1988; 60 Minutes, a series of investigative reports in primetime television, is the world’s longest-running newsmagazine. CBS News also airs a weekly docuseries, 60 Minutes Presents.
The network’s website, CBSNews.com was launched in 1996 and includes original content, hour-by-hour news updates, interactive features such as polls and quizzes, audio reports, videos, and photo galleries. The website also offers live streams of CBSN, CBS This Morning and Sunday Morning, and breaking news alerts sent via text message and mobile app. CBS News mobile apps for Android and iOS were released in 2013.
